The year was only
one long noisy day
that never knew a quiet night.

Your grin
(once strong as my shoulder)
disappearing in so many crowded rooms
each time I thought I'd found your

face again
hardly helped at all.

Dr. Budd E. Smith

Dr. Budd E. Smith beheves that a
college should expose the student to
all areas of human experience and
should clarify for him the ultimate
values and philosophies by which
men live; else, it has failed the stu-
dent at a crucial point.

Dr. Smith gives to Wingate per-
ception and perspective and, for
alumni, faculty, and students, the
immense challenge of active dedica-
tion to the highest purposes of edu-
cation.

SOPHOMORE CLASS

Through true interest and hard work, the
sophomore class of 69-70 has contributed
much to the value of Wingate College. The
members of this class have striven to help
Wingate and have succeeded in their quest
for helpful changes in student government
and other factors of campus life.

Many good times have been shared by all
sophomores, and many have experienced the
bitter taste of hardship and defeat. But
through all of these, a feeling of unity as
a class has existed. Now, as another phase
of life is drawing to a close, hopes are that
all sophomores wUl be able to make use of
the experience and knowledge gained at
Wingate, to go on and make the best lives
possible for themselves.

IN MEMORIAM

LaVERNE DEWEY VICKERY, JR.
July 18, 1950 — October 27, 1969

". . . He has outsoared the shadow of our night;
Envy and calumny and hate and -pain.
And that unrest which men miscall delight.
Can touch him not and torture not again;
From the contagion of the world's slow stain
He is secure, and now can never mourn . . ."

Percy Bysshe Shelley

FRESHMAN CLASS

Feeling strange, meeting new
people, going new places, doing
harder work, and meeting challeng-
ing demands have been charac-
teristics of the freshman year at
Wingate. Meeting all necessary de-
mands has been the hardest job of
a freshman. But the hectic life of the
beginning of the year soon settled
into a routine, and the freshmen
eventually learned the ways of Win-
gate life.

Now, being quite famiUar with the
internal structure of Wingate, the
freshmen have become a stronger
unit and are now prepared for a
coming sophomore year of leader-
ship. We hope that they will meet
with success and have patience with
new freshmen. After all — everyone
has to be a freshman sometime.

sidered important. To be eligible for
membership, a student must rank in
the top 5% of his class, with at least
twelve academic hours, and he must
be a constructive and responsible
member of his class.

Basketball

During the 1969-70 season, our Wingate Bulldogs
have had a difficult schedule. The team has exhib-
ited great determination and outstanding sportsman-
ship at all times. Coach Connell has done his best
with only three veterans returning this year. There
are many fine freshmen who show great promise
for a fine season next year. The students are proud
of the efforts displayed by these young men.

entire student body is proud of these fine
athletes, who won eight of ten matches.

heights which it has reached. Under
the superior guidance and leadership
of Coach Thomas Faulkenberry, the
athletes displayed the stamina and
skills necessary for both practice and
actual competition. Thanks and ad-

THE WORD BEFORE GOODBYE

What is the springtime after aU7

Only the other side of fall.

Oh, if I could have

I'd have made you a sunny sky.

Hello's the word before good-bye.

Sometimes it rains, sometimes it shines

yet the things I want are seldom mine.

Perhaps the next wind that blows in

will bring you back to me again.

Till then remembering just makes me want to cry.

Hello's the word before good-bye.
